Celebrating Baseball & Black History. Open Edition
In honor of Jackie Robinson Day, the 100th Anniversary of the Negro Leagues, and in partnership with The Players Alliance, we are excited to introduce the painting, ”Celebrating Baseball and Black History.”
This work of art honors Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson and Buck O’Neil, three color barrier breaking men and pillars of the Civil Rights Movement who changed the world with love, perseverance and humility:
A portion of the proceeds will directly benefit the Jackie Robinson Foundation which grants scholarships to minority youth for higher education as well as the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum which stands to preserve the rich history of those players that paved the way for African American ballplayers today.
In 2015 on MLK Jr Day, Cortney was interviewed on MLB Network by former major leagues baseball player and analyst, Harold Reynolds. Together they discussed this work of art along with eight of Cortney's other paintings honoring the Negro League ballplayers.
"Having met Buck O'Neil at the age of 18 during my first group show, "Shades of Greatness" at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, this painting has a lot of meaning to me. I was only 18 years old. Buck embraced me with such love and encouraged me to pursue my vision and career as an artist. He was the kindest soul and because of that special memory, this painting is near and dear to my heart." - Cortney Wall
